Statewide Paediatric Education and Training in Recognition and Management of the Sick and Deteriorating Child

Aims and objectives

  • Map all existing nursing and medical education programs and training tools in NSW relating to paediatric, including qualified neonate, resuscitation (basic and advanced life support), recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child and escalation of care.
  • Undertake a gap analysis to ensure training and education programs meet the requirements of the target audience, with recommendations for reducing overlap and addressing gaps.
  • Recommend a statewide program that covers: paediatric resuscitation (basic and advanced life support), recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child and escalation of care.
  • Equitable access to education and training related to recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child, paediatric resuscitation and escalation of care for both metropolitan and rural clinicians, including generalist staff that care for children.
  • Assist with the rollout of recommendations from Caring Together related to improving care for children eg Between the Flags
  • Project Officer to be familiar and participate/attend, where appropriate in the Between the Flags Project (Paediatrics).
  • This will be phase one of a two phase project. Phase two will include implementation of the recommended statewide program.

Method

  • The recruitment of a Project Officer (to be located at any site within the Child Health Networks) to:
    • Map all existing education programs and training tools in NSW that relate to paediatric resuscitation, recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child and escalation of care.
    • Recommend an education program for staff training in NSW related to paediatric resuscitation, recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child and escalation of care.
    • Collect evidence of existing programs, assessments, evaluations and sustainability.
    • While this process is being undertaken existing educational programs will continue to be supported equitably across the Networks.
  • This project will complement the 2009-2011Child Health Network Project NSW Neonatal Resuscitation training, a state project funded by the NSW Child Health Networks.
  • It is also understood that this project may well have associated links with the Between the Flags Project (Paediatrics).
  • Scope opportunities to work with the Institute of Clinical Education & Training.

Key performance indicators

The success of the project will be measured by:

  • A map of existing paediatric education programs available in NSW public healthcare facilities for paediatric resuscitation, the recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child and escalation of care.
  • Recommendations regarding the development of a preferred education program related to paediatric resuscitation, the recognition and management of the sick and deteriorating child and escalation of care.
  • Recommendations regarding the minimum standards of skill and knowledge that clinicians providing care for children in all acute facilities in NSW must meet.
  • Preparation of a report for the 3 Child Health Networks against the agreed Between the Flags KPI's.
