New England - Supporting the "Issues in Clinical Assessment in Child Protection"

This project was a workshop conducted by a Senior Clinical Psychologist, Child Protection Team from John Hunter Hospital

40 participants attended. They included New England Area Health staff (Child and Family, Sexual Assault, PANOC, Aboriginal Maternity Services, CAMHS, AOD, Hospital Social Work, Generalist social work); staff from non-government organisations (Family Support, Women's Shelter/Refuges, REFS); DoCS and JIRT.

The range of participants reflects the fact that child protection is an interagency concern and requires a response from government and non-government agencies.

88% of participants found the overall content of the workshop very informative. With 62% rating the overall workshop as excellent. They suggested future training on:

  • Child protection issues for parents with mental illness
  • Intervention strategies
  • Working with Borderline Personality Disordered parents
  • Case planning to support health workers who are 'unheard' by DoCS
  • Advantages of therapeutic tools/interventions
  • Clinical issues in child protection, ie - where to go from here/diagnosis/working with other professionals.'
  • Specific issues of child sexual abuse - characteristics of offenders - grooming, manipulation, long term abuse
