Mid North Coast - Paediatric Resuscitation and Life Support Education Workshop (Manning Base Hospital)

The project was a one day paediatric resuscitation/life support educational workshop which included development of a clinical and professional support network between the metropolitan and rural health service. Clinicians from the John Hunter Children's Hospital, in conjunction with local paediatric clinicians were the presenters. Resident medical officers, anaesthetists, emergency nurses and nurses working with children (15 in total) from throughout the region attended.

The objectives of this project were to:

  • Educate all disciplines ie resident medical officers, anaesthetists and nursing staff in neonatal/paediatric resuscitation and life support
  • Set up neonatal/paediatric resource consultancy services to be accessed from rural centres via telephone for after hours support of nursing and resident medical officer's
  • Provide a practical scenario/case management-driven workshop to increase advanced resuscitation skills and trauma management
  • Facilitate a process to enable clinicians to review their clinical practice in a supportive environment

The outcomes of this project were:

  • Increased staff knowledge and ability to deliver services to children locally, based on best practice
  • Identification of existing strengths and target areas for improvement
  • Support of professional networking between metropolitan and rural health services
