Assessment of velopharyngeal function and resonance in the community setting will necessarily be perceptual, as community clinics do not generally possess specialist equipment. Whilst instrumental assessment can be useful, it is important to note that careful perceptual judgements continue to be regarded in the literature as the foundation of speech and resonance assessment.
Assessment will include:
- an articulation assessment with phonological analysis
- stimulability testing
- a conversational speech sample
- assessment of resonance and nasal airflow
- an oral musculature assessment.

Speech assessment conducted by the cleft palate team at JHCH
JHCH Speech Pathology department provides a tertiary outpatient service to babies, children and adolescents with a cleft lip and / or palate. A specialist assessment service is provided to children and adolescents presenting with velopharyngeal disorders. Services provided include assessment, diagnosis and review. A consultative service is provided as part of the multidisciplinary Cleft Palate Clinic Team. Clients are referred back to their local Speech Pathology service for treatment. A report outlining assessment results and recommendations is provided for each client.
Speech and nasality assessment conducted at JHCH encompasses perceptual and instrumental assessment of speech, resonance and nasal air flow.
